Author(s): Hongkai Li, Shixiu Wang & Xiaowan Qin

The project is located in Hangzhou, China. Unlike traditional bakeries using display stand and cash register bar as storefront which present cakes as a result, The Reversed Kitchen regards the baking kitchen as a giant display window facing the street so as to produce the greatest interactive effect. Since the kitchen is reversed outward, it is able to show the baking process as well as a new lifestyle in the streetscape, which might attract audience to watch and participate. In addition, transparent frameless glass wall exposes its interior activities and mechanism to public. The entire design takes the idea of “Inside out” which is a slightly tilted volume sliding into an original leasing area, emerging an internal corridor. The space in between providing a walkway into the bar area. The horizontal aperture along the kitchen wall, provides the chance to glimpse the activities of the kitchen. The end of the bar together with the sloping roof produce an illusion of capacious space outside.
